Aunque no aparezcan con marca de plural, los siguientes nombres ingleses se consideran plurales, por lo cual con ellos se emplean las formas verbales y los pronombres correspondientes a la tercera persona del plural (are, were, presente simple de los verbos ordinarios sin -s; they, them, their, theirs; these, those).
– cattle — ganado
Over they years many Mexican cattle were allowed to roam loose.
– clergy — clero (también puede considerarse singular)
In the tenth century, the secular clergy were turned out of the English monasteries and their places filled by monks.
– folk — gente, pueblo
Some folk seem unable to solve their own problems.
– gentry — pequeña aristocracia
The gentry are familiar to us all from the pages of fiction, if not of history.
– people — personas, gente, pueblo
The young people are enjoyning themselves.
– police — policía
The police were wearing their new uniforms.
Sin embargo, dos de estos nombres pueden aparecer con -s final, en cuyo caso tienen un significado y un uso ligeramente distintos:
– folks (término utilizado sólo en lenguaje coloquial) — amigos, padres Hullo folks!
– peoples — pueblos, naciones
These peoples included both grain producers and cattle keepers.
