Gerundios precedidos por la preposicion to

Cuando aparece la preposición to delante de una forma verbal, generalmente ésta es un infinitivo, pero en ocasiones podemos hallar un gerundio.

Ejemplos: I am looking forward to hearing from you. – We are not used to getting up early. – He confessed to having murdered his wife.

Aunque normalmente traducimos estos gerundios ingleses por infinitivos castellanos, en algunos casos es posible traducirlos por nombres, pues suelen estar muy cerca de la sustantivación.

Ejemplos: They resorted to bombing the city — Recurrieron a bombardear la ciudad.=- Recurrieron al bombardeo de la ciudad.

Un nombre o un gerundio, pero no un infinitivo, debe seguir a:

– To amount to
– To apply / dedicate / devote oneself to
– To attend to
– To be accustomed / addicted / close / committed / equivalent / opposed / reduced / used to – To confess to
– To contribute to
– To descend to
– To get accustomed / attached / used to
– Lo look forward to
– To object to
– To react to
– To refer to
– To resort to
– To submit to
– To testify to

Sin embargo, cabe la posibilidad de elegir entre el empleo de un gerundio o de un infinitivo detrás de:

– To agree to
– To be condemned / driven to
– To consent to
